Word of Advise

As if the holidays aren't expensive enough. We received a power bill a few days ago that was twice what it normally is. I know your thinking we'll its colder but this one was for last month. It really wasn't that cold. So I sent Justin to investigate. The lady said our usage doubled last month and has doubled AGAIN so far for this month.  "What???? We haven't changed anything", I thought.

Thank God for my savvy husband. He immediately went home to investigate. Turns out the "programmable" thermostat everyone talks about (the one we just purchased) has broken and was stuck on emergency heat.

So let that be a lesson to anyone who cares. If your power bill jumps don't just pay it and forget it. INVESTIGATE!!! Justin talked to a friend of his who had the same thing happen except he waited until his bill suddenly jumped by $600.00 before checking things out.

I know you are thinking, "who blogs about bills" but I thought it may be helpful to someone who is or may be in the same situation.

On the bright side, I know what brand thermostat we aren't installing in our new house. :)

  1. Yikes! Sounds like something that would happen to us, if we had a thermostat at all. When are y'all starting to build?

  2. HAHA! I love posts about reality...you know, things like bills etc. Yep, ours sky rocketed last year for no apparent reason. I am talking- sky rocketed to the point I almost had to be hospitalized... and come to find out we had some issue with the heating element or some heat terminology that I can't thing of at this very moment. Glad you got it fixed:)

  3. Congrats on building a house! I'm glad you got the power bill figured out. I hate how it always skyrockets in the winter (when we need the money the most) even without a problem! I've thought about going to that "budget billing" just so I would know how much to plan for each month. :)

  5. I know Alabama Power and CenturyLink a long with a lot of others are very thankful for this post. Although my checking account is not :) After reading...I thought I needed to digg this weeks mail out from under the mounds of paper on my desk. Much to my surprise what I thought was only junk mail was bills.

  7. I loathe the power bill every month. Our new house is much, much cheaper than the one we rented. Glad Justin caught it.
